From collectible sports cards to memes, NFTs can represent any entity or be used to monetise any skill. At The Verge we're interested in what the next generation is doing, and it certainly looks like some of them have been experimenting with NFTs. As NFTs are essentially scrip, one day you could buy a car or a house using ETH and receive the scrip as an NFT in return (in the same transaction). Buyers with wallets loaded with Ether, USD Coin (USDC) or Dai (DAI), as well as more than 150 other payment tokens, can buy fixed-price NFTs directly from sellers or bid for NFTs at auctions, with a bid record stored in the user's profile.
And Burberry recently announced a partnership with Mythical Games to gamify the buying, selling and collecting of toys as NFTs through the Blankos Block Party game. NFTs drive a new creator economy, where creators do not cede ownership of their content to the platforms they use to make it known. The lack of exchangeability (fungibility) distinguishes NFTs from blockchain cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Other film industry projects using NFTs include the announcement that an exclusive collection of NFT artwork will be released for Godzilla vs.
Brain. NFTs allow assets to be traded on third-party markets without the permission of the game developer. In short, NFTs provide a certificate of authenticity created by the blockchain for a digital asset or artwork. But, in my opinion, the kittens show that one of the most interesting aspects of NFTs (for those of us not looking to create a digital dragon art lair) is how they can be used in games.
NFTs allow ownership of any single piece of digital data to be assigned or claimed, traceable through the use of the Ethereum blockchain as a public ledger. Buyers can find NFTs of music, video, images, GIFs and text for sale through linked Ethereum wallets such as MetaMask, WalletConnect and Coinbase. For artists, NFTs offer a new marketplace where they can sell their work and create an automated way to recoup a percentage of resales through royalty agreements. NFTs became technically possible when the Ethereum blockchain added support for them as part of a new standard.
